Nice :) Maybe we should make a 'gallery' / showroom for this stuff?

the_pm
October 17th, 2004, 16:19
The only reason I made this thread was so I could get feedback from others (site reviews) and let people see the smileys without having to register first. I'm going to delete this thread later. :)

Pauly
October 18th, 2004, 06:05
I see, then it doesn't matter ;)

8) Nice though!

sonicgroup
October 20th, 2004, 14:34
I like them as well. They have that sort of MSN-ish 3D feel without looking exactly like them.

The only thing I'd say is that with the preference for a heavy black stroke on some features of the smilies, it may be worth investigating an outline. ;)

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 15:59
I must say, I do agree with Dave about the outline.

websterworld
October 20th, 2004, 16:02
I like the retro feel to it. :D

So, it looked like fun and I whipped one up in 2-3 min's, heh:

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 16:06
Thanks for that Eugene. :) It almost looks like me after a few beers.

the_pm
October 20th, 2004, 16:06
Yeah, smileys are fun :) Maybe I'll hold a contest for a new mini-smiley pack. The winner gets it installed here and some sort of prize.

Maybe I should wait until we officially open!

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 16:08
Great idea Paul. I agree though, wait until the red tape is officially cut before we start things such as this. :D

websterworld
October 20th, 2004, 16:11
Hmm, I see a "Site Admin" under everybody's username except my own.

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 16:12
Eugene, simply because there are 3 admins. The IWDN was created by Paul H, along with Me and yet another Paul. See http://www.iwdn.net/about.php

Hope that answers your question. :)

websterworld
October 20th, 2004, 16:15
I know Jamie, I was just exercising the icons.
However, I cant find an edit button anywhere I wanted to add to my post.

I see you have about 30 posts, but I only see one thread in the whole forum!

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 16:19
Edit button > Next to the text "Posted: Wed Oct 20, 2004 3:12 pm Post subject:"

As for my 30 posts, with different time zones etc effecting us we have a forum within here for Me and the two Pauls. A lot of discussion has occured here to try and get the project up and running. :)

the_pm
October 20th, 2004, 16:20
Actually, that might only be for mods and admins...

I'm looking into a timed edit hack. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

(currently there are no mods - I expect that will change over the course of the next couple months)

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 16:23
In past experience with phpbb Paul, the edit button should work for anybody as long as it is their own post. That is unless, there has been something changed in the administration.

websterworld
October 20th, 2004, 16:24
No, the edit button doesnt have to work for every user group.
In fact it doesnt work for me! And you are correct, this can be fixed from the adminCP.

Jamie
October 20th, 2004, 16:29
Thanks for that. Glad somebody knows. I'll take a look. :)

Christina
October 20th, 2004, 18:16
Hm, I know nothing of how these phpBB thingys work but I know there's a million hacks to do things.

As for the smilies, I'll have to whip some up when I have time! Looks like fun...

the_pm
November 9th, 2004, 19:33
We have a few more smilies for y'all!

:spam: - No explanation necessary

:ot: - Ditto

:grandpa: - this one was a tribute to sea otter, but now I'd say I made it in honor of kirxklox!

:slap: - Ooh, how I've longed for this one!

I believe I have fallen in love! :( I just wish I had these LOL!

the_pm
January 25th, 2005, 01:05
So take 'em. You want the whole smiley pack? I'll send it your way :) A little credit for them would be nice, but either way, I didn't make these to cash in on them or anything, and you don't put anything on the Web you don't expect others to use. So you have my blessing.

Tyler
January 25th, 2005, 01:31
I won't take them, as of now. But if I do have your permissions I'll ask my other admin. That would be awesome :), and of course you will get credit!

I want a zippy:

http://www.btinternet.com/~acbarrett/zip.htm

(these smilies always remind me of him a bit but the real thing would be even cooler). I tried doing one myself earlier tonight but couldn't get it right (the zip on the mouth is hard to do in a few pixels).

the_pm
February 4th, 2005, 03:11

I looked for a :whistles: smilie but couldn't find one. It should resemble

:slap:

but without the "slap" wording or the initial blushed look. The middle animation of the eyes is perfect, but the mouth should be pursed, like whistling...

Kind of a "who, me?" smilie.

We can almost see the smilies back, we could find out the real truth about how hairy their back is or if it is yellow at all. How come smilies are always yellow apart from when they are sick? Is there a secret contract with 'The Simpsons'?

oh wow -- did you actually make them???You didn't know? Yeah, I hand-made every one of them. I have a couple more to unveil yet, and I take requests for new ones all the time. There's a rather long thread on the subject buried a couple months deep in the lounge (started on the day IWDN opened, I think).

I guess this post must look pretty out-of-place now  (threads merged)

sea otter
September 29th, 2005, 21:12
*bows in admiration*

No, I didn't know you made them. You are TeH MAN, Paul. They're awesome. Perfect combination of whimsy and CLARITY. A lot of smilies are very confusing; often can't tell what they're supposed to represent.

Yours are just kinda fun and happy and make you naturally smile.

Maybe it's just me or a generational or cultural thing (Bison and some of the Brits can help out on this), but I find most of the basic "smile" icons (the ones with the slits for eyes and the big teeth grins) kind of, um..., offensive To my eye, they have a certain racial parody look to them which I find unsettling. Anyone else notice this?

Tjobbe
September 29th, 2005, 23:51

I haven't noticed this Charles, but I have noticed that it is very hard to see what many smiles on other forums are supposed to be. Take the 'emlaugh' on WHT, that is supposed to be an embarrased laugh? I never could get my head around how it was that.

sea otter
September 30th, 2005, 10:33

HAH! I'm not the only one! That one always confounded me too.

What I'm specifically referring to is the icon I've attached to this post: that big grin. It looks like an awful awful slur towards Japanese or Chinese, something you might find in old disparaging propaganda material. As such, I really don't like it -- as I said, it leaves me with this odd unsettled feeling.

But obviously, new generations don't have the same associations I do with WW II, etc. etc. and simply don't see it.

Is it really only me?

Jamie
September 30th, 2005, 10:36
Now that I'm looking at it, I see what you mean. I hadn't really thought about it before you mentioned it though.

sea otter
September 30th, 2005, 10:41
Well, you might appreciate this too (being from the UK). Have you ever read any of the Tintin books? I grew up on those (and the British versions from Methuen press, not the American ones). The author, Herge, was known for his very, um, "simplistic" representations of foreign people. So that's also kind of stuck in my head. That said, I didn't like that kind of comical portrayal as a kid, either.

Actually, I don't remember a whole lot about ALF, except that he was particularly font of cats.

okay:

B.A.'s SSN was issued in California in 1970. B.A. was born in Chicago in 1955. So ok, he moved to CA somewhere along the way and got his SSN at 15 (no prob, I had mine at 13). Still his mother still lives/lived in Chicago, and every indication from the bio doesn't support the notion that he ever left that city.

Next, BA was a sgt. 1st class (E7), and was ordered to perform the robbery in Hanoi in 1971. At age 16? And assuming we skip the age thing, he made E7 in what, at most 1 year and change, because he only got his social in '70??? Wow! I'm truly impressed! That's an incredible career climb!!!

Done. :)

Wait a minute... are you telling me the A-Team isn't true? I suppose next you'll tell me the Skipper and those other people weren't really marooned on that uncharted island!

No no. That really did happen.

Ah! I found it! The simpsons song in which Mr. T makes a (fake) vocal appearance (it's towards the beginning).

WARNING! link plays an audio file.

That's obviously the same voice that does Otto. Clay's pages have been online forever, but he only found out about this video from me last year:

You know Leonard Nimoy wants that played at his funeral, right?

Oh my. I haven't seen that in ages! It never gets old! Didn't know you knew Clay (I don't). That's cool.

I actually have a record somewhere from when I was a kid with that song on it! You realize, of course, I've spent the last hour listening to "monorail" over and over. (well, that and Bart & Lisa singing Shaft).

Oh, I don't either, just someone I've corresponded with. I saw this one on his site when I first got online:

I got a request for a foot tapping icon. I hope this adequately expresses the emotion foot tapping conveys:

:foottap:

I was on a roll, so created another one...there is little question of the emotion expressed here! I struggled with whether or not to release it, but what the hell...I can always remove it later if it's being used in an abusive fashion.

Here it is!

heh - nice one. The only thing you might add is the crossed arms effect. Might be tough though. :-)

hee hee. I love it! It's not as bombastic as the one I borrow from my friend Allis from time to time.

I had to opt for arms behind the back on the foot tapping one. There was no graceful way to cross the arms. I'm open to attempts from others though :D

Perhaps yes. It's nothing more than Cameron making a series of obvious statements. I found this picture - http://www.p0stwh0res.com/images/captainobvious.jpg - and figured it wouldn't hurt if IWDN had its own Captain Obvious - Defender of everything we already knew!
