I haven't used any of the above, but http://www.opensourcecms.com/ is great for testing out a bunch of different CMSs.

In as many cases as possible, we try to do custom CMSs with customers. It gives you the most developmental flexibility and cleanest output possible.

I was asked to evaluate CMSs as a favor, and I was most impressed with Movable Type (http://www.movabletype.org/) and Expression Engine (http://expressionengine.com/) - they're still not as good as going ground-up, but if you need a canned CMS due to budgetary restrictions, these two seem like good candidates.

Immerse CMS look interesting but development is unsure as one of the authors has bailed out on the project. The other author and several users are trying to organize and keep the project growing.

Like Paul I was impressed with Expression Engine.

Yes, I have been following the Immerse CMS project discussion over at web hosting talk as well as the google group they set up.
Expression Engine does look promising, I'll have to add that to my list.

Thanks
