Could anyone suggest an affordable (aka. cheap) digital-SLR camera? So far, I've found the Pentax *ist DL and Nikon D50 to be the cheapest two (eBay), with the Pentax being the cheaper one (including bundled accessories). I'd like it to be less than $600. The Pentax seems nice, but I have a bad feeling about it.

If you can afford a Nikon, I can't think of a brand I would prefer over them. I've always had my eye on their high-end SLRs. I just don't have the $3-5k necessary to purchase one.
While I don't own either brand, I do get consumer reports, and neither one appears to be a bad choice.

Second the vote for Nikon. Love their cameras, love their lenses.

Third vote for Nikkon, as they are the best in the high -end market. Just make sure that you are positive you want an SLR, and you will not be happier.

A good alternative bang for your buck would be a Canon Digital SLR.

The Nikon D50 can be had for under $600, as well. I have a D70 that I've been using for years. We bought it when it first came out, have several lenses for it (which also work on a D50), and it has served quite well. The D50 is very similar, so based on that, I'd say it's a great choice.
