What-up,
Does anyone know how I can get hold of a mobile text number (short form) and then have incoming texts sent to email?
thanks you,
Jamie

So you want to be able to have a short text number, such as 5987, and then have all messages sent to an e-mail address, Ross? (Just making sure I know what you're after)

I can't say I know of anything, Ross.
You are probably looking for two different things. One to generate the short text number, which I assume will come from your phone network company.
The other will be a text to e-mail program. I have only ever heard of e-mail to text, and not text to e-mail.

It may even be that you need a forwarder from the short number to the longer number. I'm not fully aware how short text numbers are setup, but using a forwarder to a full length mobile number would make sense to me.

Actually right now it is a 5-digit number - if I am reading your email correctly. And since I really did not pay much attention to it - I think if you want your own 5-digit number it is $10,000 to register it.
I cannot remember the name of the companies that do that unfortunately. I had a business card somewhere, but with the move last year I am not able to locate it.

You might go to www.howardforums.com and ask there - they would probably know

OK I'll quit but here is the article as well: New ad frontier: Cell phones (http://www.msnbc.com/news/mobilechannel/990920.asp?s=COM) if I am guessing that is what you want.
I think you can have a 5-digit with your own specific subject (like a toll free number with an extension) and that costs around $1,000-$2,000 depending on the company

those 5-digit numbers to which you can sms from your phone (or a website) are called short codes. You can "lease" them from an sms gateway provider, along with being able to purchase credits for using the concommitant infrastructure need to actually process sending and receiving sms/mms messages.
Take a look at
http://clickatell.com/ and http://www.mxtelecom.com/
as Corey said, howardforums is a good place to search for more info on this stuff. So is http://esato.com/, the "other" phone forum.
I think there was even a thread or two on wht. Search there for "clickatell" and I think you'll find some threads.
