I have a complicated background image. I would like to try an play with using a small section to make a seamless pattern. Any tips?

There are a million ways to turn a pattern into a seamless tiles, and you have no way of knowing what method is best without seeing the image. Can you share?

Aww hell, for this one, I'd just do a little trial and error chopping until you hit on a good tile. Give me a sec...

Heh, my hasty attempts are not worthy of any note, that's for sure.
I think ImageReady has a nice, autotiling feature built into it. That's about all it's good for, IMHO.
I do have a decent crumple filter in Fireworks that does seamless tiling. The attachment isn't exactly the same, but it's the same flavor...

Which filter? I am working FW now. The uploaded images is squeezed a little the full size image is better quality.

I have Xenofex2, from Alien Skin. It's not a factory-installed filter.

Hmm... I don't think I have that one. Most the plugins I have were for PS but I like FW better now.

Virtually every PS plug-in works with Fireworks too. All you have to do is install them into FW's plug-ins folder, just like you would PS.
