Good news about the live cam. Simon came through with getting one of his clients to set us up for free which is much appreciated. After setting it up on my end, I will simply supply details for anyone to login to a specified URL and will be able to watch us all make fools of ourselves.

Vito

Jamie
July 26th, 2005, 20:09
Grand! Simon says people will be able to talk to us as well, now that is cool!

vito
July 26th, 2005, 20:12
Yup, it goes both ways. This technology is used for holding conferences, instructional classes, etc. Cool stuff.

I have an appointment that morning that I can't get out of. I figured I could get someone to cover for me, but alas, they won't be there either...

Oh well, count me in for the webcast!

vito
July 27th, 2005, 02:31
Hmm. I'm confused, Steve, Does that mean you'll be attending the festivities?

Vito

the_pm

It sounds like he's given his regrets. What a shame :(

Please do tune in for the Webcats though!

Tyler

Please do tune in for the Webcats though!

And we expect the following list:

1) Paul singing and playing the piano.
2) << something very funny that can't be mentioned here >>
3) Pictures of delicious food. Oh can we taste it through too?

Hmm, what else do we demand?

Christina
July 27th, 2005, 03:13
I'll need that url for the webcast as well! After my trip to L.A. it'll be fun watching everyone via la webcast ;) Oh and how will we be able to interact? Is it like a login type of session?

Lubby
July 27th, 2005, 04:40
Someone send me the webcast link to. I will only be home a few hours between the wedding and a different family birthday but it'd be cool to see whats going on.

vito
July 27th, 2005, 12:21
I'll have to ask Simon how it works. Do I send the link to each of you privately? Or do I post the link here? I'm not sure about posting it in public.

I'll get back to you.

Vito

crazyfish
July 27th, 2005, 12:21
What are you using for the webcast? Something like netmeeting where you can have people typing. I know there is a video plugin for Skype, but I think you can only have like 3-4 people at once with out it lagging out.

vito
July 27th, 2005, 12:24
No this is a different technology that one of Simon's customers uses. Pretty sure it's not limited to 3-4 people.

Vito

I've just signed a nice contract with a new client, so it may yet be possible for me to come.. we will see!

Jamie

Wahayy! There is still an extra bed in my room Tjobbe, and there are still places on my flight. :D

vito

Wow, Tjobbe, that's great news.

Don't tease us, though. Tell us you're coming and be done with it!

Must be close to 20 people now for the "event" "party" "get-together"

vito
July 28th, 2005, 12:34
Not quite 20.

Vito (and Susan and Amanda)
Simon (and Mandy and Liam)
Paul (and Amy)
Jamie
Michael [Blue] (and his wife)
Steve Canning (Simon's customer)
Adam
Nick [crazyfish] (and Denise)
J-P (and brother)

That would be 17 at this point.

Vito

vito
July 28th, 2005, 12:36
It will be 18 if Tjobbe is able to make it, but we still need to get his confirmation.

Vito

Jamie
July 28th, 2005, 12:37
*Yes*, we do, Tjobbe! My outbound flight is fully booked now, so unless somebody drops out, he will have to find some other means of getting over there.

So does that mean you're confirmed, Tjobbe?

Vito

Tjobbe

not as yet, I am awaiting a few jobs to finish, and when they have I will only be able to make it if i can get a decent last minute deal!

vito
July 28th, 2005, 13:12
OK, in the meantime, I need to practice pronouncing your name.

Tjobbe. T-jo-bbe. Tjobbe.

I figure that after a vodka martini or three, I might fumble saying your name, so I need to rehearse.

Vito

July 28th, 2005, 13:28
It will probably progress into T or big T :)

Jamie
July 28th, 2005, 13:34
 Big T, I like it.

the_pm
July 28th, 2005, 13:48
T-Dog, T-Diddy.

I've been known to call him Chewbacca (which is actually a little closer to the right pronounciation than your guess Vito  ), but only because he's to far away to beat me up!

vito
July 28th, 2005, 13:54
T-Diddy.

Yikes, after a few drinks, I wouldn't want to accidentally juxtapose the first couple of consonants - Big T would probably come over and belt me one... :(

Vito

Jamie

vito
July 28th, 2005, 15:09
Which one?

T, Big T, T-Dog, T-Ditty or Mr. T?

Vito

Edit - Dang that Jamie. He's too fast for me. :x

Small correction on the headcount. Simon's wife Mandy and son Liam will not be making the trip. However, Simon will be bringing brother in law Steve.

Vito (and Susan and Amanda)
Simon (and Steve)
Paul (and Amy)
Jamie
Michael [Blue] (and his wife)
Steve Canning (Simon's customer)
Adam
Nick [crazyfish] (and Denise)
J-P (and brother)
Tjobbe (hopefully)

An additional note - we may also have the presence of my Netasis site cameraman Dan and my favorite onscreen talent Stacy. Dan is shooting a wedding that day, so it all depends on whether he can sign off with them and pick Stacy up and join in the festivities.

Vito

Jamie
July 30th, 2005, 10:36

Turns out I won't be back from out of town until that Sunday :( is there anyway someone could save it? :D

Jamie
July 31st, 2005, 20:44
If you mean the webcam recording, I was hoping for the same as well, as I won't be back home and have access to a computer until Thursday.

Tyler
July 31st, 2005, 20:48
Yup that's what I meant! :D That's still quite a large file probably if it's for the entire time.

Jamie
July 31st, 2005, 21:00
Maybe Vito can setup his computer so it is viewing the site that the webcam is streaming to, then setup a video camera pointing at his monitor, zoomed in so it just focuses on the webcam output, although, he will be using his video camera to catch the evening, that could work though if we get hold of another video camera, or there maybe a much more simpler method.

Tyler
July 31st, 2005, 21:07
There is always an easier (http://emoney.al.ru/capture-streaming-video-and-audio/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm) way :D

Simon

Video broadcasts can be taped, I assume.

I am emailing Dave @ VlinkLive shortly to confirm this.

Simon

vito
August 1st, 2005, 19:15
I will be receiving admin login info from Simon later today. As far as I know, there can only be 3 or 4 people actually on different web cams from different locations at the same time in the session, but there can be 100s just viewing it.

When I have it all set up, I will PM Paul or Jamie to privately send out logins to IWDN members so that they can login to view the live cam.

Well everyone I'm off! Everyone who is flying, be sure and have a safe trip! Everyone who is driving, also have a safe trip, and don't fall asleep!

Be sure to have a great time y'all, and try to save the footage, at least the good footage (Jamie getting sick  )

Bye everyone! :hi: (Hmm I suppose that smiley can go backwards :D)

Simon
August 4th, 2005, 01:32
OK: The video software does not record. However, Dave recommended me "camtasia".. he records a lot of his conferences with this software, and swears by it. Basically, it just records everything on the screen, as far as I understand it.

Simon

vito
August 4th, 2005, 01:46
Hmm. I have a Camtasia licence. So perhaps I should talk to Dave about it and simply set my Camtasia to record the whole thing.

I would take a wild guess and say Tjobbe can't make it, I haven't heard from him though, prove me wrong Tjobbe, please!

vito
August 4th, 2005, 16:20
OK, looks like we're good to go with the web cam setup. Just finished up with Dave (Simon's customer). I'll have a login in an hour or two. And in terms of recording it all, piece of cake. I'll have my laptop out in the backyard with the web cam. So all I have to do (on another computer inside the house) is load the streaming video into a browser and record it using Camtasia. Done. :)

And yes, Jamie, I agree. Tjobbe, where art thou???

Vito

August 5th, 2005, 02:06
Revised headcount:

Vito (and Susan and Amanda)
Simon (and Mandy and Liam)
Paul (and Amy)
Jamie
Michael [Blue] (and his wife)
Steve Canning (Simon's customer)
Adam
Nick [crazyfish] (and Denise)
J-P (and brother)
Dave Williams (Simon's client who graciously offered his streaming services for free)
Dan (my Netasis cameraman)
Stacy (my favorite Netasis onscreen talent)

That's a total of 20.

Should be a good party.

Vito

August 5th, 2005, 02:49

Folks, I'm turning in. When next we meet, it won't be online :D

Sadly, Michael (Blue) and his wife will not be able to make it. He has suffered some property damage to his property in Cuba and needs to fly down to tend to it.

Vito

Blue
August 6th, 2005, 03:52
My apologies to all for this social gaffe.
The damage actually occurred almost a month ago during hurricane Dennis but we only got the scope of things when my wife went to Cuba earlier this week.

I will be watching the events unfold on the live feed from the airport in Montreal while I wait for my flight to Havana.

Enjoy the BBQ all.

Simon
August 6th, 2005, 03:55
Michael: Good luck with the house. I hope everything turns out OK. Hopefully the damage is not too great.

I'm sure we'll get to see you at a future get-together.

Good luck in Cuba.

the_pm
August 6th, 2005, 15:13
We just heard the news last night Michael. I'm sorry about your damage and that you're not able to make it.

Well, the fun has begun! We had a very nice dinner last night. I think everyone was a bit road-weary, but it is so nice to finally get a chance to meetup with people in real life who you've gotten to know so well online. I'm looking forward to the BBQ!

Lubby
August 7th, 2005, 05:44

I'd be surprised if anyone replies to this before about noon.

Jamie

Well, Amy and I are getting ready to pack up for the weekend and head back. So I'll save the full rundown for later today or tomorrow...or someone else will have to jump in and give it instead.

I'd just like to thank everyone for a lovely weekend.

Starting with the superb dinner that Paul and Amy treated us to, followed by Vito's superb cooking (chefchef.com: coming soon).

And of course; Jamie, for our visit to wonderland, in scaring the crap out of me on a roller coaster that seemingly travelled at the speed of sound, and had me rocketing backwards in some crazy loops (not to mention getting soaked to the bone by the log flume ride).

August 8th, 2005, 15:28
Well folks, Amy and I are back from the festivities, and we had a wonderful time! It seems there are still some people enjoying their little vacations, and hopefully everybody will chime in as their trips come to a close.

The BBQ was amazing! The food was incredible and the company was first-class :) Vito is a great host and cook, and he certainly has my appreciation for his hospitality. I feel so bad for Jamie, keeping him up until 1 a.m. Toronto time, which is 6 a.m. England time. He was a trooper, that's for sure. It was a pleasure spending the day with Simon, Mandy and Liam and Nick and Denise. Vito's daughter Amanda proved to be a talented and accommodating junior hostess as well, particularly with her musical stylings. Amy's still recovering from a pulled muscle playing badminton with her and Denise too :)

Thanks to everyone who was able to join us via Webcam. This was our first stab at something of this nature. We were late getting it in place, and the sound was a bit fuzzy (we could hear people, but we only emitted static). Also, we couldn't record the evening, but we did have an active chat window going for a couple hours, which seemed to work nicely. Next time we'll know what we need to do to make things work properly and we'll be better prepared. Still, not too bad, all things considered.

You'd think we would have talked about online stuff and the IWDN community, but it's amazing to see how naturally people can transition from the virtual world to the real world without having to mentally bridge the gap to get there. When we all got together, we just picked right up where we left off online as if we'd all been neighbors living on the same block all along.

You know, it's really quite something if you stop to think about it. We talked about this a bit, the relationship between the online world and the "real" world. The online world really is real, it's just another dimension of reality, another way to interact with people that doesn't replace face-to-face socializing, it enhances it. And those face-to-face friendships can then be enjoyed online with people from around the world. The real world doesn't get more distant because of the technology we use to communicate, it actually gets cozier. The best part is that in some way, each any every one of us is part of creating that complementary dimension of reality, whether it's through our knowledge of the technology, or simply our participation and personal endorsements of it. In that sense, I think a big thank-you is in order to each and every member here and in likeminded communities, who make it so easy to create real friendships through virtual means.

We'll be organizing more events like this in the near future, I'm sure, hopefully before it comes time for the annual one again :) Please use this thread for your comments, whether you were there, logged into the Webcam or just want to throw in your 2 cents (or pence).

Thanks everyone! :hi:

I must say that it was a real treat meeting everyone for the first time, (and seeing Simon & family again). I'm so glad you all made the effort to come. I realize that making the trip takes effort, whether it's a few hours by car, or 1400 KM by car (with no A/C), or hours and hours by plane.

The weather on Saturday was perfect, the food was good (or so I've been told) and the conversation was sparkling. Outside of Simon breaking into "Oh Danny Boy" in his underwear, the day went without a hitch. (Dang Irishmen can't hold their liquor...)

Thanks everyone for the great time. Anytime you want to repeat, I'm ready for you. ;)

Well, I guess we were just having too good a time, and as a result, we didn't think to get more footage. All I have is about 4 minutes of raw footage. I haven't bothered to edit, crop, title, or caption. So here it is in raw format. Please excuse the choppiness of the camerawork.

Sorry, folks, next time you're just gonna have to show up to see more. ;)

Firstly, a huge thank you goes out to Vito and family, it was a great night, despite me almost falling asleep. It was certainly worth the trip. The food was fantastic, despite me not eating half as much as everybody else, I think I stretched my stomach with water rather than food.

Nick and Denise are great, I may be mistaken, but I think Nick was a little bit fresh by the end of the night, I seem to remember him standing up, and the drink hitting him hard. Thanks guys, can't wait to see you two again!

As for Vito's daughter, Amanda, well, what can I say. You have a great young lady there Vito. The piano playing was great!

The dinner on Friday night was great, I just wish I hadn't been so tired. Thanks Paul and Amy for that. On the point of Amy, she is great! It just so happened, I was next door to Paul and Amy in the hotel, so they looked after me for the first couple of days, cheers guys!

As for those wondering how I handled my drink, in short, I didn't have to, because I kept myself sober. The likes of the wasted Simon was trying his best to get a guiness down me, and he eventually did, in the end, I had three beers, and then emptied Vito's water cooler. Looking at the state Simon was in on Sunday, while we were getting lost on our way to Wonderland, not drinking much was certainly the best decision.

Sunday, as you know, was the Wonderland day. It was a great day, winning plenty of toys for Liam, and waiting in endless lines. Thanks Mandy for the driving, we got there in the end. :D

Simon and family offered to take me up to Niagara yesterday, in the end I declined, to be honest, I was knackered. So, I spent a day in my hotel room watching movies and watching the planes... pure excitement.

Today I had planned to go to the CN Tower, but to be honest, I am still way too tired, and after finding out I would have to get a bus, then a train, I decided to stay here and rest again, ready for my flight tomorrow. Not going to the CN Tower or Nigara just gives me an excuse to return to Canada sometime in the near future.

Anyway, that's me. :D It has been a great trip, thanks to everybody who made it so good. I'll certainly do it again!

That was the damn watermellon Paul soaked. It hit me hard but I was fine after a little more beer and more sitting. :)

You should have made the trip to the CN tower, might you having a reason to come back to Toronto is good. Just don't forget thats only a very small part of Canada. ;)

Well, we went to Marineland (yuck) on Tuesday, followed by a visit to the falls (wow!).

Niagra falls has to be one of the most beautiful sights on earth. We stayed for the illimuniations, and it was well worth it.

We started the trip home early this morning, but it was cut short by terrible weather (thunder, lightning, and torrential rain on the 401), so we're currently in Cornwall, Ontario. We decided we'd spend tomorrow in Montreal, so we can visit the Basilica.

This trip has been great thus far. It's could well turn out to be a two week road-trip for us, depending on what we can stumble across.

My great thanks goes out to Vito, Amanda, Susan, Nick, Denise, Paul, Amy and of course Jamie, for a wonderful weekend. We watched Vito's raw footage tonight, which was of course followed by two hours of Liam saying "Where's 'Manda?".

We certainly need to do this again, soon. I myself have had a great time (minus around two hours on sunday morning... ouch) and I know Amanda and Liam are having a great time too.

Thanks to all, again.
Simon

Well well... home sweet home! Approaching 24 hours without sleep, and it is only 8:30am, so I have a full day ahead of me before I hit the sack.

Cornwall is really close to Ottawa, you guys should have stopped in Ottawa to see some of the sights.

Poor Jamie, he lacked sleep the whole time he was here and now he will be lacking it at home. The things he does for a few free beers.

Good to hear you made it home safely, Jamie. Take it nice and easy today, then tonight, go to sleep for a good 12 hours. But don't go more than that, or you'll feel like crap tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear that Adam. As far as I know, we don't have one planned specifically for IWDN members, I have seen a few floating around on WHT though.

I'm very sorry to hear that Adam. I'm glad you set aside that weekend as social time, because you were able to use it with family instead, and there's nothing more important than family!

I've been tossing the idea around in my mind, to have something within the next couple of months at my house in Canton. I'll have to see what I can manage though, and who would be in driving distance...and how far is considered driving distance for most people...

Driving distance? What about flying distance? :D

Well, that's always an option as well :)

I'll talk to Amy and see what she says. We can't go too far into October, or else it'll start getting a little too cold to keep things outside.

I just read the whole of this thread again, I gathered it would bring back some very nice memories, that it did! Cheers Vito, even now, reading the post BBQ reviews, and watching the video, it brings a very large smile to my face.

I can't wait for the next one!

If any of you get a spare 30 minutes or so, I strongly advise you re-read the thread. :)

Cool. I'm so happy to hear you have fond memories of the event, Jamie. That means the company was scintillating, and I did my job as a host!

Hehe, a "spare 30 minutes"??

Not in this lifetime!!

Amy and I will be hosting an event in our new house once we actually get our old one sold and ourselves situated elsewhere. Vito's already volunteered to be head chef if I supply all the fixins and act as apprentice (did you know that, Vito? :) ).

This is only the beginning ;)

Oh, and Jamie, I live 2 hours from Cedar Point (http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/inside_park/rides/thrill/rollercoasters.cfm) and an hour from Geauga Lake (http://www.geaugalake.com/public/inside_park/rides/roller_coasters/index.cfm).

Yes indeed, Paul, I am already well aware of my responsibilities at your upcoming (and much anticipated) event. To that end, I am diligently trying out no less than 10 new recipes per week in my experimental kitchen so that I am well prepared to orchestrate a feast fit for royalty.

Fantastic! :D I very much look forward to it Paul, just make sure to give plenty of notice to allow the ones who need to fly in a bit more time to get some cash together. :)
