Does anyone know if there is software that you could install on a server, and upload a video/sound file to the server and have it convert the video into flash on the fly? I searched google but really found nothing. Found some hosting services that did this but no software, so I am wondering if there is something off the shelf or would it be all custom code.

I doubt you want a server side software to do that. It'd definitely eat up bandwidth and up your server resources. Then again, I don't think there is such a software to do this the way you want. For your own use though, I think there are many Flash converters available and free.

some of the services I was talking about are audioblog.com and videoaddon.com.

I have an idea for something so I am doing some research right now. I'm curious as to how they offer their services.

ffmpeg (http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/)

(docs here (http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg-doc.html), sourceforge project page here (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg/))

But you'll need some horsepower behind it, and be prepared to spend some time mucking around to get it to work :)
