View Full Version : Age is nothing but a number....

is this true?

How old are you?

I am 26 and a half.

I'm 23 and the owner of a successful interactive media firm. :D

Yes, I believe it's true. I know several people online that are younger than me and are also successful business people. Experience does count for some things, but a strong will and the ability to see your goals through can offset some of that.

22 and 1/4 here!

the_pm

29 and a couple months, and I know for certain I'm not within the top three oldest in this forum. I'm hanging onto my youthful days by a thread folks...

But I know some enterprising teenagers who are very good, successful business people. I certainly don't hold age against anyone, especially in this industry!

Almost 19, I believe it doesn't matter .... unless you're immature and refuse to see a different perspective :)

Well, the real question is, will you still look like you're in your twenties and feel like you're in your twenties? You're as old as you feel in most cases!

My husband is 28 and I tease him about him being old...! Yet he looks like he's my age. My brother in law will hit the big 30 this Christmas Eve!!! But he looks like he's 24..!

Hey C, I saw the picture of your aunt. If she's really that much older than you, I'm guessing you look about 14 :D

Oh since I shaved the beard off my wife says I look 5 years younger. Which is always a bonus. :)

And as my wife is a mere 22, as the old saying goes: You're only as old as the woman you feel. Wa-heyyy!!

the_pm
November 17th, 2004, 19:32
Well hey everyone, that's why we have profile photos! Load 'em if you got 'em - it's not like anyone will know if it's really you or not...

Heh heh, my ex-wife is 24, and my girlfriend is 27, so I guess I aged a few years just switching between the two.

I actually look like I'm in my twenties now!!!! Thank you very much! I don't get carded now because I wave my shiny rings around!! 8) Well, both my aunts are born year of the dog just like me! So they're 1970 which makes them 34! But most chinese do look young....?

Zopester, I'm 22 like your wife!! And I always get my husband to shave....it really brings him down about 3 or so years even though with the goatee he still looks young!

You are only as old as you feel and I feel like a kid still ( my wife tells me I still act that way too) and I am 44 years old (a real dinosaur on here it seems)

Age certainly makes no difference to anyone but yourself (and only if you let it make a difference)

Cheers, Ross

That's five ( people older than I). :) But don't worry Ross, you're still not oldest...

Of course age doesn't matter, but it's kinda fun to find out things about the people with whom you chat now and again online.

Does that call for a Senior moment?

Yup it certainly does Sam  but only this once, after that you have to be as old as my father (87 and still passes for under 65) to get your next Senior moment.

Remember, when you get "Over the Hill" that's when you really start picking up speed

Well I have been 29 years old for three years now. In the military, I was told I looked like I was 14. And on the phone, I have sometimes been told I sounded like I was 45. 29 is good & I am sticking to that

Hey Jamie when did you finish school? I remember on another forum when you were posting using the nick jamie@school sometimes. Are you going to university in the future, or just concentrate on your buisness?

Ross

I finished school last september, currently at college studying ICT, Computing and Geography. I am planning on going on to uni but it all depends on how the businesses develop, currently got some interesting things going on in that side of things so its a case of waiting and seeing. Considering the way everybody jumps in to 10 grand of debt aswell after uni I'm not too keen. :)

Interesting. In the states, college is basically what you do after high school. It's the natural next step for anyone who plans to go into a skilled field. Some people hold off for a while for various reasons, but almost everyone intends to go (about 30-35% actually get to go).

Dan
November 19th, 2004, 21:12
Sixteen.

As far as college, I don't have any definite plans for it. I really dislike the idea of spending time + money so you can work for someone else, or have the exact same skills as every other person in your class. I figure in those four years I could learn much more myself and be more content than I would going to college.

Feel free to dissuade me if you'd like. :)

If not seeking a degree, take classes for enrichment. Learning new things is always good :) After I finish my second degree...I will be inching my way slowly but surely...maybe to a teaching degree....and many certifications in my field....

If I had no worries...I'd go to school forever...learning is a great experience (well in my field!)

Dan
November 19th, 2004, 21:27
Learning is great, but not when you're staying up all night being forced to do it. Why can't it be fun?

Well I guess that's where passion comes into play.....if you're not passionate about it why do it?

As of right now, I have to do about 30+ detailed charcoal drawings each week and plotted pen/ink perspective drawings. On top of that, I get to turn in 1 or 2 walk cycles each week for animation (drawing each freakin' frame by frame ughhh). I'd say this is more greuling than reading 400pages. On top of this, I have test for each class every week along with lectures/discussion and forced critquing of eachothers works.

And why I put myself through this? To get into my field of choice, hopefully 3d modelling and animation for Games and Movies. Pixar is over the bridge in Emmeryville and LucasArts is just in my backyard so to speak.

So my background evolved from web development into something larger, which is where my passion now lies. If you're passionate about being your own boss, who's to stop you. I have many friends and family who have their own businesses. Successful too. To have something to fall back on though is the real kicker.

Ahh..ok I think I've ranted about some nonsense long enough!! :slap:

Oh to add....I stay up around the clock finishing school projects on top of actual client work...so.....BLAHHH lovely schedule ;)

Well, this is the way of the world in this industry believe it or not! There is always someone better than you so competition is fierce. Survival of the fittest! ;)

I'll agree with you halfway here, C. It's a very fast paced, growing industry, and you do have to work very hard to stay on top of it. But I don't see it as being nearly as cut-throat as you make it out to be. I think there's a great deal of good will in the development industry, especially between independent developer and small teams, but even when talking about larger development firms. I think networks like IWDN are proof of this. I'd rather see my colleagues succeed by producing works of excellence, even if it means they're handling an account I could have had. The better the industry performs as a whole, the more valuable my skills are within it. And not only is there plenty of work to go around, it's an industry that through its natural evolution encourages ongoing demand. There's no need for people to strive to be the fittest at the expense of others. In this field, everyone can raise everyone else's performance and be rewarded for it. I think this is one of the intangible factors that appeals to me most about what I do for a living :)

True, I agree somewhat as well but I wasn't talking about the Web industry if you read it clearly!! ;) I was giving an example of what I was talking about (passion, higher learning, industry).

Indeed it does, and one I have tried to stick by when those moments we all get where we want to curl up and go to bed come in to play. Having done a full 4 months work in 6 days from last Sunday to yesterday (Friday) while on a field studies trip that statement sure played its part.

That's what makes the difference between a $rich successful business person and all the wanna-be's out there. To get ahead you have to be willing to sacrifice, and it seems that you certainly have.

Did you get ANY sleep?
