I have been looking through some STACKS lately and came across this little RATTY sheat music piece.
Would it be alright if I showed a scan of an 1868 piece I have found.
I would like suggestions as to how to maintain quality of the scan and reduce the img size and reduce the file size.

Well, it depends on what size you want the final scan or original scan to be. I scan things in usually at 300dpi+. For web, 72dpi is just fine. But it's better that you always scan in at higher resolutions because you can't scale upwards.
It's typically trial and error though. I would recommend .png format to retain greater quality. But a .jpg/jpeg should suffice for web depending on the size.

You know I'd love to see it (erm...why the flaming mad icon?).
For quality, make sure you have a reasonably good scanner and a computer with a lot of RAM. Then, scan it in at a high resolution - 300 dpi at the very least. You'll end up with a monstrous file, but you can do all sorts of converting from there if you have the right software available.

What I found is SOOOOO UNIQUE.
Paul: We were talking about that stack not twenty minutes before this PIECE showed up. I had to pick my jaw off the floor. It is a Museum Piece and Red Hot. One of those rare and wonderful pieces.
The size is a killer. Something like 12 x 15 inches. May not exactly fit my scanner.

You could scan it in halves? Sections?

Christina: This piece is OLD and very brittle. So I will be taking extreme caution with it. You all will be the first to see it as soon as I get it up tomorrow.

Well don't put the scanner cover down then. Just put some plain paper on top or something. Sounds very interesting!!

Sounds like a job for your local service bureau's drum scanner. I live in a small town, but the small town nearby has a magazine which also runs a service bureau. If they do much business at all, they've scanned plenty of historical documents, and the 12"x15" size won't be a problem.
They can also edit the image and provide different sizes/formats on a CDROM. For the document you're describing, this may be worth paying a few bucks.
