See y'all in an hour or two :D

(I'm hooked)

A bit of AI behind the scenes trivia for you, Paul (let's see just how hooked you are).

Last week, at the end of one of the shows, when the judges came into the room to give the ax to some of the contestants, Simon was missing. Why?

Bo was awesome.

(...gimme the people to free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock'n'roll and drift away...)

Bo was awesome. Amy and I agree we like Bo and Anwar the best. I thought for the most part that the judges were right on, rightfully critical and rightfully giving praise where it was due.

I'm rooting for Scott Savol too though. He's the local boy for me. I grew up in Cleveland Heights; he grew up in Shaker Heights, 10 minutes away from me, and he's only a year or two younger than me.

You're right on, Paul. Bo and Anwar. Top of the food chain.

BTW, you never answered my trivia question... :x

Ah yes, the trivia question.

He was drunk and shacked up with a hooker?

I have no idea

According to an on camera interview with Paula on one of those tabloid news programs, Simon had to hop on a plane to go back to GB. Apparently, he waited until the last minute before his visa ran out and had to get back to the Kingdom Of UK to renew it.

It was actually Paula on camera giving the explanation, so I tend to believe it.

(But I like your guess better, Paul!!)

I have to admit - none of the female tslents grabbed me tonight. Celena was close, but nothing gripping.

Earlier today I was listening to a radio talk show where callers were saying that the elimination process this year at AI is very cruel. They referred to how Ryan would tell an entire row of contestants that they were "safe", only to bring them back on stage and give one of them the axe.

Personally, I disagree. This is a reality show. And reality is (sometimes) harsh. Not to mention that it makes for great TV. It's not like he hit a lever that opened a trap door under them on stage. Yet some contend that they were inordinately cruel.

Heh. What should they have done instead? Should they have brought Dr. Phil on to gently explain that their claim to fame in life would be delayed for a bit? Should they have coddled the losers a bit more? Hey, show biz is cruel and abrupt. This is life.

The one thing that strikes me as a bit cruel is asking the loser to sing out the segment - seconds after being told that America voted them off. Kinda like asking someone to tapdance on their own scaffold.

I'm having a hard time really getting into any of the women too. Aloha really impressed me though (her strutting looked awkward, but she has a very rich voice and she's very entertaining).

Mikalah reminds me a lot of a girl I once dated with whom I've remained very good friends, her teenage twin. So I'm very slightly biased toward her. But I wasn't blown away by her performance this time.

AI isn't a reality show, IMHO. It's a really intricate version of Star Search, just a talent competition. What they do for the sake of the camera is up to them, as far as I'm concerned. And the whole elminiation process did involve Ryan being a ****head. But, it's good TV (I guess), and that's the biz, so they may as well learn it now.

I've never been able to get into American Idol actually. I really don't watch TV a whole lot in general though. My life goes like this;
Out with Friends
Computer

The only time I make it to the TV is when friends are over, or when I'm over their place and I'm watching it there.

the_pm
February 27th, 2005, 21:21
AI is the only program I watch regularly. I can't say why, I just like it :)

Well, that and football, which Amy and I both love (yet another reason to love her :D )

Nice find! A lady that likes football.

You my friend are a lucky man.

Personally, if Carrie Underwood doesn't win this thing, the whole process is flawed. She is just spectacular.

I just can't understand what the heck that Anthony guy is still doing in there. He belongs in a church choir. No more, no less. But certainly not in a pop star competition.

Sorry, Paul, but Scott is pretty weak. He just isn't cutting it. Not at this level of competition, anyways.

And Constantine is a bit of a disappointment lately. So is Bo. This guy Bo started off so well, and he seems to be fizzling out.

Then again, what the hell do I know? :homer:

My faves at this point are in this order:

1. Bo - tied w/Carrie
2. Carrie - tied w/Bo
3. Nadia
4. Anwar
5. Vonzell
6. Constantine
7. Nikko
8. Anthony
9. Scott

I put Bo and Carrie as tied, but if it was between them both, I'd pick Bo. I have to go with the rocker over the starlet. But it'd be a damn hard choice to make.

Yeah, Scott's getting weaker with every show. He has a great voice, but his stage presence is going South fast.

I'll say this - they are the best sounding group I've heard yet. The first three seasons, they sounded good as a group (last season was so-so), but this group sounds spectacular when they all come together on a song. Hands down they're the best 12 we've seen yet!

I don't like American Idol. I think The Road To Stardom was better. My girl Jessica kicked major bootay! As far as the AI goes, I liked the latin guy that had to quit. He was cute, reminded me of the gay guy from Queer Eye!

Amy

I personally want one of the guys to win. Bo needs to step up his game.

Christina

Scott Savol - i like the big guy, great voice!

vito
March 31st, 2005, 23:07
Scott. Erm, that's the guy that looks like he has no hair, and someone just spray painted some black paint onto his noggin, right?

He has a good voice, but at this level of competition, he's falling waaaaay behind.

And sorry, Amy, but at this point, unless the guys kick it up a notch a la Emeril, the girls should decidedly (and easily) take this one.

I think you will see Scott and Anthony go now and end up with Carrie, Bo and Vonzel. Who to me are the best 3 anyway.

the_pm
April 28th, 2005, 16:48
Well yeah they're the best three! Four weeks ago I said it would be Scott's turn to go. This week, he's in the top three! Amy says he'll probably be the next idol, in which case I've lost all faith in the American public to choose good talent and role models and I will never watch the show again (not boycotting AI, boycotting U.S. pop culture).

 call me weird for thinking America's role models should not be picked from a crappy TV series that's only purpose is to make someone money, and its not the 100's of people who lost, and that the role models of today need to be people who work with kids every day, whether as a teacher, or some kind of authority figure. :P

the_pm
April 28th, 2005, 18:52
Being a role model is really an aftereffect of being chosen American Idol. I think the people who compete on the show every season are exceptionally talented, some simply appear quite untalented relative to the rest *cough* *Scott* *cough*.

Of course the purpose is to make money. Duh!

Cameron
April 28th, 2005, 19:27
Kelly Clarkson a role model? Just another Brittney Spears, give it time :P

Christina
April 28th, 2005, 19:30
American Idol is such a boring show. Simon's comments are lame and Paula "I piss in my pants" Abdul should go battle her depression instead of judge, and the other guy is annoying. Also, Ryan Seacrest looks anorexic or very "thin". BLAH.

Scott is from Ohio, he represents the average working man with a kid. I like him. I don't like the blonde chick. Federov sounds good looks like crap. I like Vonzell.

the_pm
April 28th, 2005, 19:40
Vonzell is my favorite right now. Scott doesn't represent the average working man with a kid. He represents the subaverage shmuck who talks like he's 12, beats up women and gives "average people" (whatever an "average" person is anyway) a bad name. He literally lived 5-10 minutes away from me my entire life until I went to college, so I should be loving the kid, since he represents my home. Instead, I dislike him even more because he represents my home town!

Christina
April 28th, 2005, 19:45
 The Ohio breed...!

Vonzell I hope will win.

I didn't think the Rockers did a good job with their choice of songs, they completely butchered the songs in my opinion.

the_pm
April 28th, 2005, 19:57
I thought the song category was awful, and their choices from it were awful. Vonzell gave the best performance, and it was pretty good. Anthony's was second best (I'm not a big Anthony fan, but he sounded better than usual). Then Bo. Then Carrie - I can't stand the songs she picks. She has a great voice, but she's not doing anything for me with her performances. Constantine was horrible, but that's unusual for him. Scott was abysmal, and that's normal for him.

So, my rankings have changed a bit since earlier in the thread:

1. Vonzell
2. Bo
3. Carrie
4. Constantine (who's gone now)
5. Anthony
150. Scott

Seems The Smoking Gun (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0427051_bo_bice_american_idol_1.html) found some court documents on Bo. At least Fox is standing by him and at least he was honest to them from the very beginning. Being from Alabama - I can understand him smoking the pot but not the cocaine.

the_pm
May 17th, 2005, 05:54
Well, justice has been done, and I'd say in the end, the three most deserving contenders made it to the top three. At this point, I think I'm fully rooting for Vonzell, which means I'm bound to be disappointed this week - I don't think she can touch Bo and Carrie's popular appeal, but I like her the most.

I absolutely cannot choose the winner this time. It's so easy to make a case for Bo or Carrie, and for Vonzell too, though I don't think she'll pull it off. Something tells me Carrie edges them all out, but Bo sure knows how to get the crowd behind him...

OT/ Not sure what it's like there, but when Simon did the X-Factor show here, the opening stages were hilarious. People would argue with him that they were a good singer, or were just really bad.

the_pm
May 19th, 2005, 04:46
Well, it was disappointing to see Vonzell go, but I don't think there was any question it would go down like that.

Bo and Carrie - I think pretty much everyone knew it was going to end up that way, even from the beginning of the Top 12.

Well, I'll be rooting for Bo. He was insanely cool with his performance yesterday!

Lubby
May 19th, 2005, 15:54
Figured these would be the final 2. Go Carrie!!

vito
May 19th, 2005, 15:56
Pretty torn between these two, but I'm leaning towards Bo. Either way, they are both destined for stardom.

Woohoo! They're milking this thing for 2 hours tonight. We're into it almost the first hour. Within 60 minutes or so, we'll know who is the American Idol. My prediction - Carrie.

Vito

the_pm
May 26th, 2005, 03:07
Unfortunately, I think you're right. Carrie reminds me of my ex-fiancee from waaaay back in my early college days in an uncanny way, so I'm having a hard time rooting for her. Her name was Carrie too.

Go Bo!

the_pm

Wow, the idols singing with their idols part is really good! Vonzell is fantastic!

Lubby
May 26th, 2005, 04:11
I called that.

Carrie is going to be huge!

Odd Fact
May 26th, 2005, 17:51
But everyone just knew Kelly Clarkson would be a huge star after she won. I am not sure of Carrie's transformation. It will depend on how the market her. It would be easy to develop her as a country star but I am not sure if Nashville will take to an AI winner. Not to mention you can't throw a stick without hitting a new country female.

Christina
May 26th, 2005, 18:04
Carrie is not going to have a great career. Kelly Clarkston barely has a pop career.

Fantasia sounds great (I played some of her songs on iTunes). Ruben, never cared. Clay is a retard. I personally hope Vonzell comes out with an album. Everyone pretty much gets a contract. It's all fixed anyways.

the_pm
May 26th, 2005, 18:32
I'll agree halfway with Christina. Vonzell was absolutely on fire last night. She did an incredible performance, and she is absolutely smokin'! It's a shame her strongest genre is so saturated and almost cliche, because she has diva potential.

Carrie will have a great career. Country loves it when the mainstream pays attention to their artists. They can take an AI winner and plant her solidly in their camp, and they'll jump all over it. I predict Carrie will have the most success of any AI winner thus far (not too hard really, though I guess Kelly's pretty strong at the moment). I don't much care for country, but I think she's going to rock the country charts.

Odd Fact
May 26th, 2005, 18:53
The only problem with country is there are already numerous female singers as good or better than here on the way up and down. It depends who develops here. I am seen anyof the big nashville producers working with AI. But time will tell.
